After 27 years in the electrical trade, I look at commercial lighting very differently. Lighting is an electrical system, and the fixture is only the part everyone sees. Behind that fixture may be hundreds of feet of wiring, breakers, contactors, photocells, timers, lighting controls, underground conduits, junction boxes, and electrical connections that all have to work together. When something goes wrong, simply replacing the light doesn’t necessarily solve the problem.
My experience with commercial electrical systems started long before Pinellas County Electric existed. Earlier in my career, I worked in demanding commercial and industrial environments, including power plants, pharmaceutical facilities, hospitals, schools, industrial facilities, and large commercial buildings. Those environments taught me to look at the entire electrical system instead of focusing only on the component that stopped working. That mentality continues to influence how we approach commercial lighting projects at Pinellas County Electric today.
One of the areas where we see the biggest opportunities for improvement is addressing lighting issues in commercial parking lot lighting. A parking lot can look completely different after the sun goes down. During the day, everything may appear perfectly fine, but at night you begin seeing dark areas, failed pole lights, uneven illumination, poorly lit entrances, and sections of the property where fixtures have slowly stopped working over several years.
